FCA USA LLC has posted some impressive second quarter earnings. The secret according to CEO Sergio Marchionne? “We got smart on pricing.”
It’s tough to earn profit in such a variable industry as automotives, but Sergio Marchionne has been leading his company to do great things. “Heading into these second quarter results, we expected another modest NAFTA result…. We thought Q2 would prove FCA couldn’t reach its 2015 targets,” Bernstein Research analyst Max Warburton said in a research note. “The score today: Sergio 1, the Doubters 0.”
The key comes from the performance of two key parts of the FCA USA LLC lineup: Jeep SUVs like the 2015 Jeep Cherokee as well as RAM Trucks like the 2015 RAM 1500.
“Those two brands make up to 59% of their sales in the U.S. and that is up from 54% last year,” Eric Lyman, vice president of industry insights for True Car, said. “So they are selling a richer mix of more profitable vehicles.”
This focus on variety is not stopping anytime soon, with FCA USA LLC currently working on boosting profit of their latest parent-brand acquisition and creating a new SUV for that luxury brand. It’s a definite gamble that will take a lot of work to coordinate, but Marchionne seems confident that it will pay off.
