Battery, Alternator or Starter: Identifying the Source of Car Starting Issues

There are many reasons a vehicle has trouble starting or just won’t start at all. But how will you know what the cause is? There are definite indicators that will help identify the source of the problem.

1. Bad Ignition Switch, Starter or Starter Motor

When you try to start the engine, but don’t hear the starter motor, that can indicate a bad ignition switch or starter motor. The ignition switch controls the vehicle’s electrical systems, so your vehicle’s dashboard lights may flicker or not come on at all. If your vehicle uses a key to start the engine, the key may be hard to turn.

2. Dead or Bad Battery

A dead or bad battery is the most frequent a vehicle won’t start. Today’s transportation relies on electricity. Whether the vehicle is gas-powered, a hybrid or all-electric, when no electricity is flowing to the starter, the engine won’t start. You may hear a “click” when you try to start the engine, but the engine won’t turn over.

3. Bad Alternator

The purpose of the alternator is to recharge the battery. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the vehicle’s electrical systems run after it has started. When the battery can’t recharge, it can’t supply electricity to those systems. A bad alternator does not mean the battery is bad. If the alternator is failing, your vehicle can stall, make screeching noises, you may smell burning rubber, and the lights may dim.

There are many other reasons a vehicle won’t start. The best way to avoid these issues is to bring your vehicle in for routine service. Be sure to stick to the maintenance schedule that comes with your car. This will help you avoid costly repairs down the road by identifying and servicing any failing parts before your car breaks dow
