When you think of vehicle maintenance service, oil changes, brake service, tire service, and fluid level checks are the main items. However, there is one service that doesn’t usually come to mind—the coolant flush service. You may wonder how often you should flush the coolant and why it’s so important.

Vehicle engines get extremely hot when running. The engine needs something to protect it from wearing down and melting. That would be a very costly repair. Coolant is a liquid that transfers heat while adding antifreeze to protect the engine, keeping it cooler. Coolant is also a lubricant, which protects the moving parts it contacts. A damaged head gasket, water pump or cylinder is a much costlier repair than a coolant flush. Old, non-functional coolant can also cause rust in the engine and its components. Another function of coolant is to resist freezing. If an engine freezes, that can cause cracks—another expensive fix.

There are many signs that your vehicle’s coolant needs to be flushed and replaced. 

• Gas mileage is reduced
• The heater doesn’t work right
• The engine emits a sweet smell
• There’s an orange, green, or pink puddle under the vehicle
• The warning light on the dash comes on

A coolant flush, also called a radiator flush, isn’t something that needs to be done often. If you don’t notice any of the above signs, a coolant flush should be done at least once every 30,000 miles. However, each vehicle is different.
