The Legacy of the Dodge Hornet: A Look Back at the Iconic Concept Car

Here’s a brief lesson on the Dodge Hornet concept history. In the beginning, the Hornet name paid homage to the Hudson Hornet, a full-size vehicle manufactured from 1951 to 1957. AMC took over the rights to the name, and from 1970 to 1977, they manufactured the Hornet as a hatchback, sedan, and station wagon. Then the name was passed over to Chrysler.

The Dodge Hornet was a joint venture between Chrysler and Nissan and was first introduced in 2006 as a mini multi-purpose vehicle concept car. The original Hornet concept design included five doors, a powerful Chrysler-BMW 1.6-liter supercharged, four-cylinder front engine, and a six-speed manual transmission. This well-received concept car could go from zero to sixty in 7.5 seconds and could reach estimated top speeds of nearly 135 miles per hour. Dodge’s original plans were to manufacture the Hornet in 2010, but the 2009 global financial crash, along with other factors, put an end to that plan.

There was another Dodge Hornet designed in 2010 after a merger with FIAT. That Hornet was slated to be introduced at some point between 2011 and 2013. However, in 2011 this vehicle became the Dodge Dart. So, the Hornet was left on the drawing board once again until this future car idea was able to become a reality in 2023.
